The word “pizza” comes from the Latin. The first pizza was created in Gaeta in 997 AD.
There are today many pizzas with different ingredients but the pizza Margherita is in many authentic Italian flag. According to tradition, in 1889, 28 years after the unification of Italy, during a visit to Naples Queen Margherita of Savoy, wife of King Umberto I, the chef Raffaele Esposito of Pizzeria Brandi and his wife created a pizza he remembered the colors of the Italian flag, red (tomato), white (mozzarella) and green (basil). In honor of the Queen they called it Pizza Margherita.
Whatever the true origins of this pizza, what we know for sure is that the version of Raffaele Esposito to Queen Margaret was the one that made it popular. Since then his reputation has grown to become one of the most recognisable symbols of the Italian food culture in the world.
